Green River Arboretum

Green River Park and Arboretum is located at Thelma Stovall Park,  101 River Rd in Munfordville, Ky. Located on the banks of the beautiful Green River, our city park offers a boat, canoe & kayak launch ramp, paved walking trails, the Jenny Wilson Byrd hiking trailhead, hiking trails, a 9-hole disc golf course, covered pavilions, grills, a children’s playground, and offers seasonal primitive camping.  Munfordville is recognized as an official Tree City USA member and a certified Kentucky Trail Town.

Munfordville Trailtown

Kentucky Department of Tourism announced Munfordville as a certified Kentucky Trail Town April 27th, 2017.  Munfordville is the first designated Trailtown in the Mammoth Cave Area of Kentucky. The Kentucky Trail Town Program is a tourism based economic development program that provides a plan for communities to capitalize on their opportunities for outdoor recreation,  increasing opportunities for healthy physical activities through access to trails and recreational areas.  Come Explore Munfordville & experience the Green River, it’s great for families, experienced or beginning canoeists and kayakers. You’ll love the Green River experience from 300 Springs to Mammoth Cave National Park.    

Trailtown adventures in Munfordville include the Green River, Big Buffalo Crossing Canoe and Kayak, camping and hiking at Thelma Stovall Park Green River Arboretum, the Mammoth Cave Loop of the TransAmerica Cycling Route and several other locally designated cycling routes. Munfordville also hosts the Annual Big Buffalo Crossing BBQ Cook-Off Contest and is home to Kentucky’s Stonehenge, a popular roadside attraction.

Thelma Loyace Hawkins Stovall

Thelma Stovall Park in Munfordville is named after a remarkable woman! Thelma Loyace Hawkins Stovall, born April 1st, 1919  and died February 4th, 1994, was a pioneering female Southern politician who won several statewide elective offices in Kentucky.  In 1950, She began her long career serving in the Kentucky House of Representatives, where she served three terms. 

Thelma Stovall served three terms as Kentucky Secretary of State from 1956-60, 1964-68, & 1972-76. Between those terms she served as Kentucky State Treasurer.  Stovall was the first woman to be elected Lieutenant Governor, serving as the 47th Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1975–1979 under the Governor Julian Carroll administration.  She was appointed as a member emeritus of the Kentucky Commission on Women by Governor Martha Layne Collins.  

Stovall was born in Munfordville, Kentucky in 1919 and moved with her mother and little sister to Louisville when she was eight years old. At age 15, Thelma Stovall went to work sweeping floors at the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company to help with the family’s  finances. Her single mother was raising two children during the Great Depression. At Brown and Williamson, Stovall began her involvement in organized labor and remained a strong friend of the Kentucky labor unions throughout her long career in public service. She was a lifelong advocate and champion for the rights of women & working people.

Munfordville Municipal Cemetery

It is Mowing season again and the cemetery committee would like to remind everyone that we need all accessories and flowers on the ground removed for the mowers. Flowers may be left on headstones and shepherds hook immediately next to the headstone. Anything left will be removed at the committee’s discretion.

Additional Cemetery Information

  • A single mausoleum must be on two (2) burial plots and a double mausoleum must be on three (3) burial plots
  • The City of Munfordville may issue a burial plot refund for the original purchase price with a certificate of burial or deed of conveyance as proof of ownership
  • No benches allowed
  • The cemetery is open from sunrise to sunset

Kentucky Regulation require a plumbing permit for the establishment of all new water meter settings. A homeowners permit may be obtain for a property owner who request a new tap on – new meter setting and is willing to install the line form their new meter to their existing plumbing.

Commercial, rental, and services which will or may be available to the public require a plumbing permit which must be obtained by as licensed plumber.
