Munfordville is the county seat of Hart County, Kentucky. The name Munfordville, came from Richard Jones Munford, who donated the land to establish the new county seat in 1816, the County was formed January 28, 1819. We recently had a year long celebration of Hart County’s Bicentennial. Munfordville was incorporated in 1858 and we have a Mayor–Council government system, monthly public City Council Meetings are held at City Hall. City Hall is directly across from our historic Courthouse Square, between the Hart County Historical Museum and the Munfordville Welcome Center & Gift Shop, which houses the Munfordville Tourism Office.
Courthouse square includes the Munfordville Courthouse, which houses the Hart County Clerk Offices, offering Voting & Motor Vehicle services, the Hart County Judge Executive’s office, and the fiscal courtroom. The Hart County Judicial Center, across the square, houses the Hart County Circuit Court Clerk Offices, DMV office, and the Circuit Court Judge office and Courtrooms.
Munfordville has a rich history, our town was settled in the early 1800’s on the banks of Green River where the Buffalo did indeed cross the river, the original settlement was known as “Big Buffalo Crossing”. We embrace our history and host several annual festivals and events celebrating our heritage. Green River is one of the most diverse rivers in the world.
